The inspiration for Palaeolithic Storm came to me whilst sitting in King Arthur's Cave, which was actually occupied by man during the Upper Palaeolithic. It was however built up over a much longer time period than 'Pangaea' as I mainly used true natural sounds, recorded in my garden rather than synthesized effects and had to wait for them to occur naturally. The sounds I used were cats mating at 4 am on a June morning in 2001, bird song from the large fir tree outside the back door and the mother of all thunder claps, which I caught during a terrific storm in July of the same year. The sound of bees was recorded at the entrance to a nest in the masonary of my house. The wolf howls were produced using a Roland Synth and the human voices are my own voice, lowered in frequency and reversed. I thumped the whole drum track out manually with one finger on a keyboard, which proved to be quite a feat as I actually have little need for such fervent wrist exercise. I do, of course realize that the image of a group of troglodyte Jim Reeves fans sheltering from a summer thunderstorm in King Arthur's Cave and listening to the distant drums of another tribe is more a romantic than factual idea as most of the area would have been covered in ice at that time, but I hope you enjoy the tune none the less. |
Contemporary cavegirl, Tina borrows my wellies to accompany me on a Doward Cave photographic mission. |
