Some
Interesting Ross-on-Wye Buildings
The
photographs below, which were taken during the summer of 2000,
depict some of the many buildings to be found in Ross-on-Wye,
Herefordshire
of historical interest. The old Toll House, Walford Road, the
Rudhall, Pye and Webbe Almes Houses, the old Station Hotel, 'Tudor
House' and 'Man of Ross House', which was the home of John Kyrle.
The
Old Toll House Cottage, site of the Walford Turnpike Gate. There
were once four toll gates in Ross-on-Wye.
The
Plague Cross with the Tudor built Rudhall Alms Houses in the background.
Tudor
House. One of the few remaining half timbered houses in Ross-on-Wye.
Alms
Houses in Old Gloucester Road, altered and thoroughly restored by
Alderman, Thomas Blake in 1889.
Man
of Ross House. Once the home of John Kyrle, a major benefactor of
the town who died on 7 November 1724, aged 88.
The
Webbe Alms Houses, Copse Cross Street, built in 1613 and restored
in 1963.
The
old Railway Inn and Brook House, which was the house of James Merrick
and built in the early 1670s.
The
Pye Alms Houses. Endowed by Thomas Roberts Esq in 1554. The gift
of William Pye, Vicar of Foy in 1600, rebuilt in 1679.
