The
late 15th and 16th century living history, theatre and dance
troupe, 'Melford hys Company' performed at Goodrich Castle during
the weekend of 7th and 8th June 2003. The weekend's performance
consisted of three mummers plays; 'The Reeve's Tale' - adopted
from Chaucer's tale, 'St. George and hys Manie Enemies' - a
traditional mumming play and 'Chanticleer and the Fox' - an
old Flemish play. There were also dances performed during which
the audience were encouraged to join in, along with displays
authentically representing the lifestyle and activities of a
group of travelling players on the road. These included encampment,
cooking, along with everyday craft and language.
Attending
the Sunday afternoon performance with Tina, my daughter Sarah
and our 'Twinning Association' guest, Marc Rosenkranz from Betzdorf,
Germany, we had a fantastic time and I particularly enjoyed
the music, performed by the players using a drum, English pypes
and home-made rauschpfifes. Regarding
the request on Melford's printed red leaflet, here goes: To
whom it may concern in charge of Goodrich Castle, I have a good
report of 'Melford hys Companie', please invite them again.
