With
a population of 55,700 people, the City of Hereford - Herefordshire's
county town is the largest settlement in the county, lying 14
miles north-west of Ross-on-Wye
by road and 23 miles north-west of the City
of Gloucester.
Hereford's
Cathedral dates from 1079 and is the home of a chained Library,
the Diocesan Treasury and the 'Mappa Mundi,' which is the oldest
surviving map of the world, drawn on a piece of Vellum in about
AD 1290 by Richard de Haldingham.
Hereford
is a beautiful city, well worth a visit if touring the Wye
Valley and is also a good place to head for if visiting
Ross-on-Wye and the Wye Valley by train.
