CATHERINE'S CHURCH, HOARWITHY |

The
impressive Italinate parish church of St. Catherine's, quite
unlike any other Herefordshire
church, can be found above the village of Hoarwithy, about
4 miles north of Ross-on-Wye. The original chapel was built
in 1840 by Reverend Thomas Hutchinson, Curate in charge of
Hentland Parish. In 1870, Prebendary William Poole, Vicar
of Hentland 'beautified' the property he considered 'an ugly
brick building with no pretensions to any style of architecture'
in Southern Italian Romanesque and Byzantine styles.
The
photographs below were taken during the extraordinarily warm
and sunny morning of 27th January 2003 to replace the images
I took in 2001 but was never really happy with. In order to
show local scenes as they truly look, like all other photographs
on this web site, they are 'as is'. I have not for example,
attempted to remove the telegraph wires from the outside view
top right.
Other
local churches photographed for this site include but are
not limited to:
St. Michael's, Brampton
Abbotts * St. Lawrence's,
Weston * St. Mary's,
Ross-on-Wye * St.
Bridget's, Bridstow.
