Over
the past five years, I have received many requests for photographs
of trains and railway stations in or close to Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.
These have come from people wishing to visit the area as well
as train spotting enthusiasts. The railway station in Ross-on-Wye
was unfortunately closed due to the 'Beeching Axe,' during the
1960s but, if my memory serves me well, I am pretty sure that
I included at least one photograph of the station in the archive
section of this site when first building it. (I'll check later
and, if I didn't, I'll add one.)
As
a result of Mr. Beeching and his 'Axe,' the closest train station
to Ross-on-Wye is situated ten miles distant, in Ledbury,
Herefordshire.
Yesterday, I found myself having to visit Ledbury Train Station
and whilst there, I took a look around. I was pleasantly surprised
to find that the town has a truly 'Thomas the Tank Engine' type
railway station, with a small wooden ticket office and waiting
room. At the risk of being labelled, 'Train Spotter' I took the
photographs below for this web site. I was well aware of the,
'knowing' looks from people on board the waiting trains as I entered
the station sporting a Nikon D100 camera, note pad, yellow anorak
with mittens joined together by a string threaded through the
sleeves and 'Alan Wood' embroidered in red on a label, sown inside
the collar, but I ignored them in favour of the betterment of
Wyenot.com.
