The current
market building in the centre of Ross at the junction of High
Street / Copse
Cross Street, Gloucester
Road and Broad Street
was built between 1650 and 1654 replacing an older building
and is still in use as a market place to this day. Ross-on-Wye
is a town which is highly dependent upon tourism and, following
modern British tradition, town planners (who usually live somewhere
else) have made provision for out of town supermarkets and an
in town one way traffic system which made it virtually impossible
for coaches to stop by the market, as they used to. It is now
entirely possible for the visitor to bypass the town centre
without realizing that it is there. It is such a shame to see
Ross-on-Wye becoming a town of estate agents, building societies
and charity shops! I hope this page will go somewhere towards
pointing out to the rest of the world that Ross-n-Wye is still
accessible and that there is more to it than just a car park
on the edge of town or a pub at the end of the M50.
Some of
the photographs of Broad Street on this web site were taken
from the top window of the market building. See also the Heritage
Centre and Snow
2004 pages. The
precise National Grid Reference for the street lamp in the right
hand photograph, middle row is: SO 59902 / 24149.
