The
photograph of the beautiful sunset below was taken and sent
in by reader, David Cooke of Ross-on-Wye. Thank you for that,
David and I look forward to the promised archive pics.
If
you have a photograph taken locally which you would like to
see published here, please email.
Jpeg (.jpg) preferred but not essential. Please send a file
larger than 700 pixels wide if landscape or 350 pixels wide
if portrait so that I can reduce in size to maintain quality
of reproduction.

Archive Ross-on-Wye
|
Quite a wide variety of subjects are covered in this week's
archive. The top two photographs are scans from the Ross Gazette
archive and the bottom picture is a very poor quality photograph,
taken from the garden of my house, in Cawdor.
I do not
know anything about the crashed glider in the photograph below
but I would assume that the accident happened somewhere locally.
I would be interested in information, if anybody remembers
the event.
Photo
number two is of Ross Football club, circa 1977. I recognize
most of the team members but can only remember a few of their
names.
The bottom
picture was a snapshot, extracted from an old Kodak Instamatic
127 negative of 1976 vintage. I have included this because
it shows buildings which no longer exist. The house, in Nursery
Close was demolished in the 1980s, as was S.H.A.C.S.
The demolition of S.H.A.C.S LIMITED, flour mill in
Greytree Road made way for Fontein Court - warden assisted
accommodation.

Response to 'Assinder' Enquiry.
Alan,
I would like to place the following message on your " can
anyone help ? " page, please. In reply to David Assinder :
I have a William Assinder b. around 1850 who married Eliza
Keyse b.1854 in Llanwarne, Herefordshire (not too far from
Ross on Wye). They had 4 daughters, Emily, Amy, Effie, Florence.
I am descended from the Keyse family of Llanwarne. Could your
Assinder possibly be the father or uncle of my William ? Happy
to share any information. Colin Smith - Cannock, Staffordshire
Thank
you for that, Colin. I have passed on your email to David.

Comedian
in Goth Chart Success!
Musical
Comic, Paul B. Edwards must have broken some sort of record
in his latest escapade - the popular stand up recently found
his self-funded CD, optimistically entitled "Paul B.'s last
CD", uploaded onto a huge Gothic music website and it wasn't
long before the black-clad in cyber-space began taking an
interest. This peaked with their recently-published download
figures for January, in which our intrepid comedy explorer
took up no less than seven - yes seven! - places in their
top ten! Nestled in amongst the number 2 spot (Every night
is Hallowe'en by the Beautiful Deadly Children) and the number
10 spot (Midnight Configuration's "Metaphysical") the bequiffed
songster holds on to places 3 to 9 inclusive with tracks including
"Randy The Cowpoke", "Skegness" and "I LOVE ROSS ON WYE" Asked
to comment on his phenomenal alternative chart success, Mr.
Edwards responded in typical fashion saying "This is nothing
less than I deserve and my biggest achievement since losing
forty eight quid on "Bargain Hunt". This would seem to prove
that not only is Paul B.'s music eminently downloadable, but
also that Goths know how to smile after all.
