Above.
Water Fringe, Nymphoides Peltata. Photographed
on Monday, 4th April this example burst into life in my
garden pond last week. This species can become invasive
in swamps, lakes and slow moving rivers.
Below.
Mandarin duck, Aix galericulata (at least, I think
it is). Unlike the yellow swan, this is a genuine photograph
I took on Sunday morning, 3rd April of what I think is
a Mandarin duck (left one of the two) on the River Wye.
Until Sunday, I had never spotted this variety of Duck
in Ross. The photograph is not particularly good as the
duck was a long way off and the weather was a little grey
at the time of taking. I will look out for more and try
to get a closer shot during the coming weeks.

'General
Custard' reveals his true colours . . .

A
surprising number of you did not twig that my photograph
of General Custard, the yellow swan published last week
was a 1st April joke.
Sorry to disappoint you but as you can see, I actually
used a photograph of a nothing out of the ordinary, plain
purple swan and airbrushed it yellow.
I
am sorry that some viewers and readers of the Ross Gazette
had a wasted trip to the river to try and spot him - didn't
you, Dennis!
My
favourite email received on the subject came from Andy
Clarke and simply read, 'Birds Custard?'
Thank
you to those who helped 'validate' the story to hopeful
riverside bird watchers.

Again from my Ross Gazette collection, both I would suppose
to be mid to late 1970s: Unknown
musicians on the Market House apron and a 'Wolf Tools event.
If
you recognize yourself or can give an exact date to either
photograph, please let me know. I cannot credit the photographer(s)
in this instance as I do not know who he/she/they was/were.
