The following rugby reports were written by Sarah Webb. Sarah is a local girl who eventually wants to work in Public Relations but has been advised to study journalism to begin with. I met Sarah at the friendly match between Ross 2nds and Twickenham Rugby Club on Saturday. Sarah enjoys covering sporting events in particular and is trying to gain as much journalistic experience as she can for her degree.

Wyenot News welcomes reports from those interested in local news and is happy to welcome Sarah, who will be covering events about town every so often.

Good luck, Sarah and here's wishing you a successful future!

Ross 2nds out of the cup!
by Sarah Webb

On Tuesday night the elements took control of the match where the Ross 2nd team lost to the Berry Hill 3rd team in a close semi-final away from home. Berry Hill's kicking kept them in the match and a last minute penalty allowed them to clinch a 9-8 win and knock Ross out of the Forest of Dean Minor Cup.

After a slow start from both teams and very little difference between them, both sides converted penalties for the score to go to 3-3, with Matt Taylor getting the points for Ross. An injury to Paul Hayward brought Gavin Oates on at flanker but as Ross realigned Berry Hill failed to take advantage, missing a penalty attempt. As play continued Ross made many errors and went in 6-3 down at half time after giving away a penalty and having Richard Saddler sin-binned.

Ross came out fighting in the second-half and made two changes bringing on substitutes Lee Lusty and Matt Redman. The visitors dominated possession and some great throwing in at the lineout from hooker Tony Clements kept the pressure on Berry Hill. A fantastic run from Chay Brine and a timely pass to prop Andrew Lovering who found himself out on the wing, led to the prop charging over the line to score the only try of the match. Giving the Ross team an 8-6 lead.

Ross continued to pressurize but did not capitalize and in the dying seconds of the game Berry Hill were awarded a penalty. A great kick from Berry Hill denied Ross their win and a place in the final of the cup.

Ross 2nds: Saturday's friendly against Twickenham

After Tuesday night's washout Ross 2nds were hoping to get a better result in a friendly against touring team Twickenham on Saturday, but their hopes were soon quashed when Twickenham took an early lead and continued to notch up the points taking the score to 31-0.

Ross came back with a well worked team try, scored by Richard Russell to make the score 31-5 to Twickenham at half-time.

Twickenham continued to over power Ross and scored three second half tries, which Ross could only reply with a single try from Matt Taylor, leaving the final score at 46-10.
