On
Tuesday night the elements took control of the match where
the Ross 2nd team lost to the Berry Hill 3rd team in a close
semi-final away from home. Berry
Hill's kicking kept them in the match and a last minute
penalty allowed them to clinch a 9-8 win and knock Ross
out of the Forest of Dean Minor Cup.
After
a slow start from both teams and very little difference
between them, both sides converted penalties for the score
to go to 3-3, with Matt Taylor getting the points for Ross.
An
injury to Paul Hayward brought Gavin Oates on at flanker
but as Ross realigned Berry Hill failed to take advantage,
missing a penalty attempt. As play continued Ross made many
errors and went in 6-3 down at half time after giving away
a penalty and having Richard Saddler sin-binned.
Ross
came out fighting in the second-half and made two changes
bringing on substitutes Lee Lusty and Matt Redman. The visitors
dominated possession and some great throwing in at the lineout
from hooker Tony Clements kept the pressure on Berry Hill.
A
fantastic run from Chay Brine and a timely pass to prop
Andrew Lovering who found himself out on the wing, led to
the prop charging over the line to score the only try of
the match. Giving the Ross team an 8-6 lead.
Ross
continued to pressurize but did not capitalize and in the
dying seconds of the game Berry Hill were awarded a penalty.
A great kick from Berry Hill denied Ross their win and a
place in the final of the cup.
