The
Gin Game
|
|
'The
Gin Game' presented by the Hereford players can be seen
at the Phoenix Theatre on Friday and Saturday, 18th and
19th May.
The
Gin Game is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play and starred Jessica
Tandy and Hume Cronyn when it was first staged and, more
recently, Joss Ackland and Dorothy Tutin.
Weller
Martin is playing solitaire on the porch of a seedy nursing
home. Enter Fonsia Dorsey, a prim, self-righteous lady.
They discover they both dislike the home and enjoy gin rummy
so they begin to play and to reveal intimate details of
their lives. Fonsia wins every time and their secrets become
weapons used against one another. Weller longs for a victory
to counter a lifetime of defeats but it doesn't happen.
He leaves the stage a broken man and Fonsia realizes her
self-righteous rigidity has led to an embittered lonely
old age.
The
Hereford Players have been performing continuously since
1945 and have had many successes at drama festivals, most
recently in April of this year when they won through to
the Central final of the All England One-Act Theatre Festival.
In the past eighteen months Gordon Stewart and Amanda Watkins
have won six trophies between them for Best Actor and Best
Actress at drama festivals, and they are looking forward
to their first appearance at The Phoenix Theatre.
Tickets
for the play can be obtained from Ross Heritage Centre.

A
Visit from Hannah More Primary School
|
|
Pupils
at Goodrich Primary School enjoyed a visit from their counterparts
at Hannah More Primary School, an inner city school in Brisol.
The visit took place on Wednesday, 2nd May. The Goodrich
pupils had previously received letters from every year group
at Hannah More and recognized their new friends on their
arrival from photographs which had been included.
Teacher,
Lisa Middle from Hannah More presented gifts during the
school's visit of a Hijab, which is a Muslim head dress,
a sweat shirt and a DVD of the school's play. The play was
about characters to do with Goodrich Castle and had been
based in information given to them by Goodrich Primary teacher,
Noel Edwards.
In
the photo, teachers, Noel edwards and Lisa Middle can be
seen with pupils from both Goodrich and Hanna More Primary
Schools.

Successful
Rock and Ross Dance
|
|
Ross-in-Bloom
held a very successful Rock and Ross Dance last week. 'Just
Rocking', a live band from Bristol, entertained this very
well attended event at the Bowling Club. Everyone enjoyed
taking themselves back to the 60's with plenty of music
and dancing.
Ross-in-Bloom
is self-supporting and the sales of tickets and a raffle
enabled the group to pay for the band, a delicious ploughman's
supper and the hire of the room with a bit to spare. This
money raised will be put towards the Chairman's projects
this year, which include the planting of trees and the History
of Ross.
The
Chairman of Ross-in-Bloom would like to thank everyone who
supported the event including those people who travelled
from Abergavenny and Cheltenham. Particular thanks go to
Jo Ashman who arranged the evening and Ross Lions who also
supported the event. Special thanks go to the Bowling Club
for supplying a superb venue and lots of drinks from the
bar, and to those local traders who supplied the food.
The
dance was the culmination of a week of events for Ross-in-Bloom.
Earlier in the week the Queen's tree was planted in Dean
Hill Park. Guests were invited back to the Town Council
Chamber for a light lunch with coffee. Margaret would like
to thank the Town Council and the Priory Coffee House for
supporting this event as well as Herefordshire Council for
their help with sourcing and planting the tree.

Weather Station Readings
|
|
Ross-on-Wye Weather Station is located by the tennis courts
and bowling green at 'Crossfields' and is one of the important
stations around the country which regularly sends data to
the Meteorological Office. This is why Ross-on-Wye is sometimes
mentioned on the BBC weather reports. It is currently still
a manually monitored station and readings are taken twice
per day by husband and wife team, June
and Rex Swallow.
