After having to postpone their plans to hold a car wash on Sunday, 27th May due to torrential rain, the students of John Kyrle High School had far better weather on Friday. They washed and valeted cars from 8 am until 6 PM and managed to raise approximately £200 pounds towards their Uganda Fund. Christian Ferguson very kindly loaned the students his cleaning equipment and even helped in the proceedings. Well done all of you.

on the occasion of their
Wedding day!

John and Sue were married on the Greek island of Agios Sostis on Monday, 21st May 2007. The island of Agios Sostis lies in Lagana bay and the whole area is a marine park, the largest breeding ground for loggerhead turtles in Europe. The 21st May is known as 'Ionian Day' in Greece.

Jay Hill, Landlord of the Prince of Wales was John's best man and, as can be seen, the couple were joined by a few people from Ross, including Paul & Ali Randell, Sue's mum, dad, sister and boyfriend as well as other friends.

John Brown and Paul Randell are both members of the well known local rock band, The Zebras.

A regular reader of Wyenot News came up to me whilst I was working at a party at The White Lion on Saturday to say thank you for keeping him in touch with home. Nick works overseas and says reading the news each week helps him get through some of the difficult times. I'm sorry I did not get the opportunity to speak with you for very long Nick. When Alan arrived shortly afterwards to pick me up we looked for you, but you had already left. We would both like to say thank you for your kind donation. Keep well, keep safe and keep in touch.

On Saturday evening popular solo artist Simon Blight will be performing at The Prince of Wales from 9 pm and on Sunday afternoon between 2 PM and 4 PM Ross Town Band will be performing at The Bandstand. The concert is free but donations to local charities will be welcome.

Mehr als 60 Betzdorfer verbrachten die Pfingsttage in Ross-on-Wye - Dominik Wichmann bestand seine Feuertaufe - "Doc Hermann Wetter" setzte leider kurzzeitig aus

Nur noch drei Plätze waren im Reisebus frei, als sich dieser am vergangenen Freitag, von Betzdorf aus, auf den langen Weg in die englische Partnerstadt Ross-on-Wye machte. Dominik Wichmann, der Anfang des Jahres den Vorsitz Des Partnerschaftsvereins übernommen hatte, machte seinen Job als Reiseleiter sehr gut und begrüßte die Teilnehmer der Fahrt und wünschte allen schöne Tage in England. Das Wetter schien bestens zu werden und auch der Reiseplan war bis zur Fähre in Calais nicht in Gefahr geraten. Leider geriet die Reisegruppe, die aus 49 Personen bestand, um London herum in die alltäglichen Feierabendverkehr, so dass Ross-on-Wye erst in den späten Abendstunden erreicht wurde. Dort angekommen, wurden die doch ein wenig von der langen Fahrt strapazierten Deutschen, von den englischen Freunden herzlich begrüßt und zu ihren privaten Unterkünften gebracht. Jetzt hieß es erst einmal: schlafen.

Am nächsten Morgen um 10 Uhr fand dann der offizielle Empfang der Stadt Ross-on-Wye in der St. Mary Church Hall statt (die SZ berichtete). Phil Cutter, der noch bis vor rund drei Wochen Bürgermeister der Stadt gewesen war, richtete einige Worte an die Freunde aus Betzdorf. Auch der Betzdorfer Bürgermeister Bernd Brato, der mit seiner Familie zum ersten Mal in Ross war, begrüßte die Freunde und bedankte sich für die herzliche Aufnahme vor Ort. Anschließend wurden dann die Gastgeschenke ausgetauscht und sich, wie sollte Es anders in England sein, bei Tee und Kuchen unterhalten. Der amtierende Bürgermeister aus Ross, Derek Bedford, kam leider zum offiziellen Empfang etwas zu spät, dafür überraschte er die Betzdorfer aber MIT einer Rede auf Deutsch.

Für den Nachmittag hatten die englischen Gastgeber dann eine Stadtführung durch das schöne Ross organisiert, die aufgrund der großen Nachfrage, sogar in mehreren Gruppen durchgeführt werden musste. Auf diesem Wege konnten die Deutschen und Engländer "ihre" Stadt einmal besser kennen lernen. Nach rund zwei Stunden fanden sich alle dann wieder zusammen und genossen eine warme Tasse Tee und ein Stück Kuchen. Der Tee tat richtig gut, hatte Es doch leider angefangen zu regnen. Am Abend trafen sich dann die Deutschen und ihre englischen Gastgeber zum gemeinsamen Abendessen in der etwas entfernt von Ross liegenden Upton Bishop Millenium Hall. Die Halle war gut gefüllt, hatten sich doch rund 120 Personen zum Abendessen angemeldet. Nach einem sehr guten englischem Essen wurden dann von Seiten der Vereine die Geschenke überreicht. Dominik Wichmann und Pat Burbidge wünschten dem Austausch auch für die folgenden Jahre weiterhin alles Gute und das noch viele gegenseitige Besuche stattfinden werden. Nach über 25 Jahren konnte in diesem Jahr zum ersten Mal Dr. Gerhard Hermann aus persönlichen Gründen am Austausch nicht teilnehmen. ER ließ Es sich jedoch nicht nehmen, einige Grußworte an die Anwesenden durch den neuen Vorsitzenden verlesen zu lassen. Für seinen bisherigen Einsatz erhielt Dr. Hermann einen großen Applaus und die Anwesenden wünschten ihm alles Gute und das ER beim nächsten Austausch wieder MIT an Bord sei. Gemeinsam ließ man den Abend bei persönlichen Gesprächen ausklingen bevor der Bus wieder in Richtung Ross fuhr.

Der Sonntag stand für alle zur freien Verfügung. Leider hat Es an dem Tag teilweise richtig heftig geregnet - das sonst so oft gelobte "Doc Hermann Wetter" (Sonnenschein in England, wenn die Deutschen in Ross waren), blieb leider aus. Die Gastgeberfamilien konnte dies aber nicht erschüttern, sie zeigten ihren Gästen Attraktionen wie z.B. Burgen oder schöne Orte in der näheren Umgebung. Und MIT einer Tasse englischen Tee ließ sich auch das regnerische Wetter sehr gut ertragen.

Am Montag stand dann der gemeinsame Tagesausflug auf dem Programm. MIT zwei Bussen fuhren die Deutschen und Engländer in die rund 30 km entfernte Stadt Gloucester. Hier wurde die wunderschöne Kathedrale besichtigt. Nach den Führungen, die rund 90 Minuten dauerten, ging Es dann weiter nach Eastnor Castel. Hier gab Es die Gelegenheit, die noch nicht so alte Burg zu besichtigen. Rund um das wunderschöne Anwesen fand eine Dampfmaschinenausstellung statt. In einem angrenzenden kleinen Park konnte eine Greifvogelflugschau sowie "Holzhackwettkämpfe" bestaunt werden. Der Abend stand dann in den Gastgeberfamilien zur freien Verfügung.

Um dem Berufsverkehr rund um London auf der Rückfahrt aus dem Weg zu gehen, entschloss man sich dazu, bereits um 7 Uhr englischer Zeit die Rückfahrt nach Deutschland anzutreten. Dies war eine sehr gute Entscheidung, die dazu führte, dass man eine Fähre früher in Dover bekam. Lediglich ein kleiner Stau um Brüssel herum brachte den gut durchdachten Reiseplan ein wenig durcheinander. Ziemlich genau um 22.30 Uhr ereichte die Betzdorfer Reisegruppe den Busbahnhof. Hier wurden die Reisenden bereits von den Angehörigen erwartet.

Fazit der Ross-on-Wye Reise 2007: Dominik Wichmann hat seine Feuertaufe MIT Bravour bestanden, die "Bratos" sind Freunde von Ross geworden und Dr. Gerhard Hermann muss einfach wieder MIT nach England fahren, damit das Wetter an Allen Tagen gut ist.

This is my own very rough translation of what Marc wrote, which I have made in a big hurry near the publishing deadline. I hope it is somewhere near accurate. Please forgive me, Marc, if I have it wrong. AW.

Only three places in the touring bus were free as it made the long journey from Betzdorf to Ross on Friday. Dominik, who had taken over presidency of the partnership did a very good job as guide and welcomed the travellers to England, wishing them a good time.

The weather was okay for the ferry crossing from Calais. Unfortunately though, the group of 49 people, were delayed in London by end of working day traffic, so did not arrive in Ross until late evening. They were nevertheless welcomed, by the English friends and and shown to the houses of their hosts with time left only to sleep.

On the next morning at 10 o'clock the party were officially welcomed at St. Mary's Church. Phil Cutter, who had been mayor until three weeks ago addressed the friends from Betzdorf. Also the Betzdorfer mayor Bernd Brato, who was with its family for the first time in Ross, thanked friends for their cordial welcome before gifts were exchanged.

The Mayor of Ross, Derek Bedford, unfortunately arrived too late, but he still surprised the Betzdorf visitors with a speech in German.

A guided walk around beautiful Ross took place in the afternoon, which had to be accomplished in several groups due to large demand. Both Germans and Englishman became better acquainted with Ross on the tour. After approximately two hours all enjoyed a warm cup of tea and a piece cake as it began to rain.

In the evening then 120 Germans and English hosts met for dinner at the Upton Bishop Millenium Hall. After a very good English meal gifts were presented on behalf of both.

Dominik, yielding man and Pat Burbidge hoped that future exchanges would take place in future years.

After over 25 years for the first time Dr. Gerhard Hermann, for personal reasons, could not participate in the this year's exchange. He left some greeting words to be read out to those present, by the new chairman. For his past participation in exchanges, Dr. Hermann received a large applause and those present wished him well, hoping he will come to Ross on future exchanges. Personal discussions then took place before the bus left for Ross.

Sunday was free for visitors and hosts to enjoy but unfortunately, it rained on the day violently - the otherwise so often praised "Doc Hermann weather" (sunshine in England, if the Germans were in Ross), was unfortunately missing.

This did not deter the host families, who showed their guests attractions such as castles or beautiful places nearby. And with a cup English tea, the rainy weather could be borne very well.

On Monday the Germans and Englishman drove approximately 30 km to the city of Gloucester where the beautiful cathedral was visited. Following a 90 minute tour, they then then travelled to Eastnor Castel. Here there was the opportunity to visit the not yet so old castle. A steam engine exhibition took place. At Eastnor and in an adjacent small park a bird of prey display and "wood chopping matches" could be admired. The evening was then free to spend with the host families.

In order to get around London on the return trip, avoiding the rush hour, the bus left at 7 o'clock English time on Tuesday for the return trip to Germany. This was a very good decision, which got the bus to the ferry in Dover on time. Only a small back-up on the bus around Brussels brought the well thought out travel plan a little disorder. At 22.30 the party arrived back in Betzdorf.
