What's Happening in Ross This Week?

Saturday 28th July sees the start of Carnival week with lots of activities going on for all to take part in leading up to Carnival Day on Saturday 4th August. Why not go along to Ross Heritage Centre and pick up an entry form for the increasingly popular 'Odd Object' competition? Forms must be completed and returned to the Heritage Centre by 12 noon on Friday 3rd August.

On Saturday evening, the amazing Will Killeen will be performing at the Prince of Wales from 9 pm. We are really looking forward to seeing Will again.

Sunday, 29th July. Due to the success of last year's event where £500 was raised for Whitchurch School, the Old Court Hotel are holding a Garden Party with lots to do, a hog roast, an 'Open the Box' raffle and some terrific entertainment. Later, at The Prince of Wales fun Carnival Quiz is being held. The quiz will begin at 8 pm.

Tuesday, 31st July. A carnival coffee morning is being held at Ross Market place with stalls raising money for the Air Ambulance, Ross Pre-School Playgroup and St. Michael's Hospice. This event will run from 9 am until 1 pm. Meanwhile in the Heritage Centre there is a 'Make Forts and Fairy Castle's' activity session going on between 11 am until 3 pm.

Wednesday 1st August. The scouting movement is celebrating its centenary this year and anybody who is or has been involved with the movement is welcome to come along to Ross market House at 7:45 am to join in a Renewal of Promise. Please contact Robin Shaw if you would like to take part in this event as they are hoping to offer rolls to those attending and want to be sure that they have enough. You can contact Robin by emailing:

For later risers, a Carnival Prize Bingo Night is being held at The Prince of Wales. Eyes down at 7:30 pm.

Friday 3rd August. Broome Farm is the venue for a Grand Folk Night, with lots of great music from Compost Heap, who always provide terrific entertainment with their great range of songs, and the Spureme, Awesome Dudes with their excellent acoustic roots music. The bar opens at 6 pm and as well as delicious cider, there are lots of other beverages to choose from and some great tasting food will also be available. Tickets cost £5 and can be reserved by telephoning 01989 562824 or by emailing

Readers' Flood Photos

Thank you to all readers who sent in photos of the weekend's flooding. The top photo, sent in by Nick Dale shows just how much water is flowing down the River Wye. I did actually think of calling you, Nick, to book a flight myself for flood photography reasons but I didn't think there would be any chance of getting to Staverton Airport.

John Gartside sent in the one of the water meadows at Sellack. John also sent a small time lapse video of the meadows filling (which I did eventually manage to play in 'rm' format, John. Sorry, mobile phone technology is beyond me).

Martyn Pocknell sent in the rugby pitch telling me that training was cancelled. Again - fair weather boys! What about Water Rugby? Now there's a thought!

Sean Darker sent in the dog by the bandstand, seemingly oblivious to the rising water. Just so happens that I know that dog, Sean. His name is Danny and he is a regular at the White Lion Inn. I've had many a coffee with him (don't often drink pints).

Jeff Kendall sent in the M50 motorway shot after having been trapped there overnight on Friday Saturday, 'with only four cigarettes to last the ordeal'.

The Wye at Wilton by John Gartside.

Rugby training is cancelled by Martyn Pocknell of Ross Rugby Club.

Jeff Kendall took this photo of the M50 Motorway, whilst stranded in his vehicle over Friday / Saturday night.
