'Wildplay' Comes to Ross-on-Wye

Herefordshire Nature Trust have been running a series of 'Play Days' for children in and around Ross. The sessions are part of the Trust's 'Wildplay' project and encourage children to get outside and play, whilst investigating the natural world around them.

The activities will include things like den building, bug hunting, making mud pies etc. so parents are advised not to take their children along to these free sessions dressed in their Sunday best.

There are four remaining play days taking place and are as follows:

Today, Wednesday, 22nd August - kings Caple Primary School,
Thursday, 23rd August - Goodrich Primary School,

Friday, 24th August - Tudorville, Ross-on-Wye, on the green outside the youth centre,
Friday, 31st August - Peterchurch Community Hall.

The sessions run between 10:30 and 12:30, then 1:30 and 3:30 pm and are FREE! There is no need to book a place but if you would like further information then please contact the Nature Trust by telephoning 01432 356872.

Nature Watch:

I had a call from Debbie at the Hope & Anchor on Monday morning, 'The white duck has found a friend'. So I went to take a look. Sure enough, he has and what's more, the new arrival could become more than just a friend! Its beak is a lighter colour, so they might be male and female.

The next two photos were taken on one of my filming excursions along the Wye - Mute Swans and Canada Geese.

A little further down the page, the cygnet seen in the flood films a few weeks back has grown to that 'spotty teenager' stage and still swims with one leg on its back. I am not sure if this is a genetic double jointed thing because the swan above his photo, which I took at Wilton earlier this year, does the same thing. That particular swan is not the cygnet's parent but I guess there is a touch of incest (the game for all the family) going on in the local swan world.

To finish, I have included a couple more duck photos taken at the Hope & Anchor on Monday morning whilst waiting for the chilli and chips I had ordered for lunch. Going to the Hope killed two birds with one stone - photography and food at the same time.
