The
streets of Newent were jam packed on Saturday as at least
10,000 people made their way to the annual Onion Fayre,
which does have a prominent 'onion' theme but is also a
huge street fayre. Newent Onion Fayre is always a great
day out, with musical entertainment, fairground rides, morris
dancing, market traders, charity stalls and last but not
least, onion judging and a lot of very happy regular shopkeepers.
This
is the type of successful event which began in Ross-on-Wye
back in the late 1990s with 'Gala day, but in Ross, the
local shopkeepers bickered with one another and instead
of turning into a massive boost for every business in town,
it fizzled out. I am sure that there is a lesson to be learned
here, somewhere.
Tina
and I met many people from Ross at the event, as well as
some friends from Monmouth and we had a great time. What
did make me quite sad whilst we were there though was when
I asked if Willum, officially the oldest Town Crier in the
world was present. Unfortunately, the reply was that Willum
had sadly died a month or so ago. In St. Mary's Church there
was a memorial exhibit to Willum, which is pictured below,
along with a photo of the great character himself, which
I took last year.....
