In
a small, secure compound, located between Walford Road and
the tennis courts lies Ross-on-Wye Weather Station – probably
noticed by many without its purpose actually registering.
For many years Ross weather station has provided statistics
for various publications, including the back page of the
Daily Telegraph where it formed part of the global statistics
on weather, thus raising the profile of the town and putting
it on the map.
In
these days of instant information, statistics from the Ross
Weather Station and the daily weather can be found on numerous
web sites, including Wyenot News and the Town Council’s
website, and therefore there is less of a need for a printed
version. However, there is still a need for volunteers to
provide the information.
The
Weather Station has been manned by volunteers over the years
for a small honorarium for no other reason than an interest
in the weather and volunteering to do something for the
community. More volunteers are now needed to take on this
role, which requires an element of commitment, dedication,
fitness and a head for heights, as part of the job is to
read instruments located at the top of a ladder.
If
anybody is interested in undertaking this unique role and
wishes to know more, please contact the Town Clerk on 01989
562373 or by email at: clerk@rosstc-herefordshire.gov.uk.
