RUGBY: ROSS RFC RETAIN THE NORTH MIDLANDS VASE

Ross Rugby Club First team capped off another successful season at Stourbridge last Sunday, successfully defending the North Midlands Vase by defeating a stubborn Evesham side 12-6. With promotion already in the bag to Gloucester Premier, Ross pulled out one last performance after a hectic season and had enough left in the tank to emerge victors and Champions for the second year in a row.

The first half proved a cagey affair. Ross had the lion's share of possession and territory and looked to build pressure that would lead to the opening score. Captain, Gavin Oates led from the front and with the Ross tight five dominant at scrummage time it seemed that it was only a matter of time before they would open the scoring. However, with too much regularity they conceded penalties just as it seemed the opening score would come. This enabled Evesham to relieve the pressure and regroup, so at half time neither side had opened their account and the tie was there for the taking for both teams.

Evesham started the second half the strongest, camping in the Ross twenty two for the opening fifteen minutes. Evesham threw everything they had to break down the Ross defence but time after time Ross put their bodies on the line and denied Evesham that opening score. From a pressure relieving penalty Ross got possession in the Evesham half and showed great patience as they controlled possession and it was this control that led to the opening score.

Once in the Evesham twenty two, the Ross pack drove the ball tight. Controlling the ball from the back of the ruck, they eased to within 5 yards. From the base of the ruck James Hughes fed Adam Clements who crashed through two tackles to score under the posts. Chay Brine converted and Ross were 7-0 ahead. Once again Ross let Evesham back into the contest and with ten minutes to go they had closed the gap to 7-6 with two penalties. With the tie in the balance it was Ross who upped their game.

Again the forwards took control of possession and with less than a minute to go, Ross added the final score. From another well controlled ruck, Ross moved the ball right. It went across the back line to Baz Parker, who cut inside his man before offloading to Luke Gray who crashed over to score wide out. The conversion was missed but the referee blew the final whistle and Ross had defended the trophy they had won last May.

Ross RFC annual awards dinner and dance is at The Chase hotel 7.30pm on Saturday, 16th May. There are a few tickets left, costing £25 each. Please contact Martyn Pocknel on 07817917838.

The Committee and officials would like to thank all those who have contributed to another successful season, especially the main sponsors, Walford Timber, HB Spices, Hagesud Bosse, Premier Limo’s and Charlie’s Bar.
