Speed Limit on A49 Ross to Hereford Road

Whilst travelling along the A49 from Ross to Hereford, I had never really thought much about the speed limit - just about arriving at my destination. Well that was until I saw the after effects of an accident on the A49 in which a blue corsa and three other cars had been in a pile up.

The effect that the accident had on me was to make me think, '60mph on an A road - especially the Longest "A" road in the County, and in my eyes the most dangerous too, is far too fast. In some places, the limit is 40 mph but for 75% of the journey to Hereford it is 60.

There are many groups on 'Facebook' such as 'Stop Road Death on A49', This is my point, reduce the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph, this would reduce the number of road accidents and the number of lives being taken away.

If you support me in this opinion, a petition is already up and running on 'Facebook'. Is it fair to the victims families to have to go through that? Is it worthwhile letting more people suffer?

Ricky Barlow Chairman of Herefordshire Youth Council Chairman of Ross Youth Forum

Thank you for that Ricky. I agree that there are far too many accidents on the A49. However, while reducing the speed limit would in theory make the road safer, the likelihood of those intent on driving too fast sticking to the limit it is another matter. Better enforcement is needed and stiffer penalties to those who disregard the speed limits. I do believe that plans are in the pipeline to try to address this very serious issue.
