part of their Summer Tour, the choir of Corpus Christi College,
Oxford, visited Ross-on-Wye to perform an evensong at St.
Mary’s Church on Thursday, 2nd July, followed by a concert
at Walford Church on Friday 3rd July. The choir were thrilled
at the wonderful turnout at both events – both churches
were nearly full!
Thursday the choir led a traditional evensong as they would
normally do on a Sunday in the college chapel. The Friday
concert, however, was an opportunity for the choir to perform
some of their favourite pieces from throughout the year,
from early pieces by Weelkes’ Hosanah to the Son of David'
to more modern pieces such as Lauridsen’s 'O Nata Lux.'
choir enjoys the company of local member, Duncan Alston
a former Head Boy at the John Kyrle High School, who persuaded
the choir to include a visit Ross-on-Wye in their tour.
The singers thoroughly enjoyed being joined by a current
sixth former at JKHS, Stephan Turner along with The Voice
Squad, a local youth choir run by Mark Sanderson. Their
excellent singing gave the Oxford Students a run for their
money and the evening culminated in a most stunning arrangement
of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow.' Both choir and audience
alike also thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful food and wine
provided at the interval by members of the Walford Church.
on the tour, the choir have also sung Choral Eucharist in
Granchester, Evensong in Birmingham Cathedral and a concert
and Morning Worship in South Molton, Devon. Whilst not singing,
the choir have been to Alton Towers, shopping in the Bull
Ring, canoeing down the Wye and have enjoyed comparing curry
in Birmingham and Ross! Despite some sunburnt knees and
aching arms from canoeing and a broken down car, much fun
was had by all.
choir would like to thank everyone who supported us so well
by coming to our Evensong and Concert as well as members
of Walford and Ross churches who have helped in the organization
of these events and the hosting of choristers.
