RUGBY - OLD BRISTOLIANS 42, ROSS 1ST XV 5

A well drilled Bristolians outfit were too strong for Ross last Saturday. Even with a spirited second half display they ran out 41-5 losers and as a result fall into the bottom two in the Gloucester Premiership.

The home team started the strongest and quickly established quality possession and territory. Three early penalties did not help the cause and Bristolians were ahead after only 5 minutes, scoring a well worked try wide out on the left. Bristolians were now firmly on the front foot and Ross were unable to slow the game down. As a result tries came at regular intervals during the first half and when half time did arrive Ross were 27-0 down.

With the wind and slope in their favour In the second half, Bristolians must have fancied a cricket score. However, to Rossís credit they dug deep, looked to keep the ball in hand and began to fight their way back into the game. Mike Chandler was impressive with ball in hand before he had to go off with a groin injury and Dave Mince showed great composure at the back of a retreating scrum.

The whole team worked hard and were finally rewarded when Gavin Oates collected the ball from the back of a ruck after some great work by Chay Brine and Gareth Holdsworth, and cantered over from 5 yards out. Bristolians did add another two scores to give a final score of 41-5, however injuries and two late drop outs on Saturday morning had put Ross up against it. Those that did travel to Bristol on Saturday did themselves proud in the second half, showing guts and determination, qualities that will be required if Ross are to stay up this season.

The GMP Software Design man of the match was Mike Chandler for some great work with ball in hand.

Next Saturday, Ross 1st XV have a break from league action, but the 2nd XV will be playing Evesham in the North Midlands Merit League at home. Kick off is at 2.15pm.
