Ross bagged their first league win since last November in
this thrilling encounter, where the result was in the balance
right up to the last play, with Ross scoring the crucial
bonus point try to put them outside the drop zone. This
was a crucial game for Ross who had found themselves in
automatic relegation prior to this game, however, a determined
display up front supported by some great skills behind saw
Ross clinch victory with the last play of the game.
It
was Ross who managed to get their noses ahead early on after
a great solo try from fly half Gareth Holdsworth who cut
through the defence before dummying the fullback to score.
Casey Morgan added the conversion and Ross were 7-0 ahead.
However, with ball in hand, the Colstonians were dangerous
and after a fumble in midfield, it was the Colstonians Centre
who cut through some poor tackling to bring the score back
to 7-5.
Ross
bounced back almost straight away after some sharp handling
by James Hughes and Huw Bellamy saw Casey Morgan tackled
a yard short of the line. However, Wing, Sam Griffiths was
the first to react and dived over to score to put Ross 12-5
ahead. The seesaw encounter continued, however and the Old
Colstonians hit back with a try of their own and two late
penalties saw both teams in at half time 15-15.
The
third quarter was a nervy affair and both teams were unable
to keep hold of the ball for long enough to trouble either
defence. It was the Colstonians who took the lead for the
first time in the match with 15 minutes to go, with a try
wide out on the left, which put them 20-15 ahead. Ross,
however, would not lay down and with the forwards ably led
by Tara Barnett punching holes in the Colstonian defence,
it was Grant Holdsworth who cantered over under the posts
to bring the scores level. Casey Morgan added the two points
to put Ross 22 to 20 ahead.
With
time running out, the Old Colstonians threw everything at
Ross but with the last play of the game, Casey Morgan outpaced
their defence to seal the win and clinch the try bonus point.
The
Morris and Aubrey Man of the Match was Adam Clements. Next
Saturday Ross will be back in league action against Old
Bristolians. Kick off is at 2.30pm.
