Ross RFC 1st XV were comfortable winners in their last home
game of the season and in doing so secured their place in
Gloucester Premier for the 2011/12 season, running in four
tries to secure a 26-8 win against an under powered Old
Boys outfit.
It
was the visitors who took the lead with a 10th minute penalty.
However, it did not take Ross too long to wrestle that lead
back as fly half Chay Brine scored a great individual try
after cutting the Old Boys defence to pieces, outpacing
the cover defence to score. Casey Morgan added the conversion
and Ross were 7-3 ahead.
As
the game entered the second quarter, Ross were in complete
control. Dominating both scrum and line outs the Ross pack
were able to give their back a steady stream of possession,
and it was only the final pass that prevented Ross from
adding further scores. First,Huw Bellamy's pass to Sam Griffiths
was spilled with the try line at his mercy, then Chay Brine
could not find Huw Bellamy with a scoring pass. As a result
it was the forwards who decided to get into the act.
From
a line out, Wayne Williams found Matt Jones at the front.
Dave Mince drove the ball on followed quickly by Tara Barnett.
With the Old Boys defence splintered, Captain, Gavin Oates
picked up the ball at the back of the ruck and ran straight
through the middle of the defence to score. Again Casey
Morgan converted and Ross went in at half time 14-3 ahead.
The
Ross pack continued their domination at the start of the
second half, however, after a brawl 15 minutes in which
saw Ross prop Matt Redman sent off, the Old Boys took a
quick penalty and their centre scored in the corner to put
them back in the game 14-8 down. This, however, did not
signify a comeback and the Ross pack, even with one man
down, reasserted its dominance and from another great scrum,
Craig Powell put Chay Brine in space to score in the left
hand corner, putting Ross 19-8 ahead.
Within
minutes the game was put safe with a Tony Clements score.
From another secure lineout Matt Jones set up the drive.
The ball was worked back to Tony Clements who drove over
from close range to score. Casey Morgan converted the touch
line conversion and Ross were comfortable 26-8 winners.
The
Drop inn man of the match was Chay Brine who controlled
the game at 10. Next Saturday, 16th April Ross will play
their final league game away to Widden Old Boys. Kick off
is at 3pm.
