Friday 23rd November: Burglary in Hereford
|
|
Police are appealing for information following the
theft of metal from a construction site in Hereford.
Copper wiring, aluminium window fittings and lead
roofing materials worth in excess of £1,000 were taken
from a construction site off Ledbury Road, close the
Texaco service station.
The
compound was entered some time between 6pm on Sunday,
18th November and 8am on Tuesday, 20th November, when
the items were noticed missing. It is not known how
entry was gained or to which part of the compound,
but it is possible that several people or a vehicle
may have been involved. Nothing was seen or heard
on the site, however.
Police
are investigating the burglary as part of Project
Livewire, a force wide initiative to tackle metal
thefts in the area. It was launched in July and has
so far led to more than 40 arrests for offences across
the West Mercia region. A significant increase in
global demand for non-ferrous metals has been reflected
in significant increases in price and scrap values.
This has led to an increase in the number of thefts
and criminals are targeting building sites, farms,
churches, schools, HGVs and a variety of other sources
to steal metal such as copper, aluminium and steel.
Items
such as pipes, road drain covers and even road signs
are being taken.
Part
of Project Livewire involves officers visiting scrap
metal dealers to inspect their books and encourage
their business to become licensed. Stop checks are
also being carried out on vehicles transporting metal
and police officers are checking drivers for the correct
documentation.
In
the West Mercia area there were 413 metal theft offences
during 2006/07, almost 60 per cent up on the previous
year. The value of materials stolen amounted to more
than a million pounds. West Mercia Constabulary is
urging businesses to think about protecting their
property to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
Offenders often visit premises to plan a theft beforehand
and many thefts take place at weekends when premises
may be empty.
Business
owners or managers should:
•
Ensure there are no weak spots around the perimeter
of their property where criminals may gain easy access
to the site or the building itself.
• Secure all gates, doors and other entrances when
frequent access is not needed.
• Remove all opportunities for crime, such as bins
that could be used to climb over a wall, hiding places
or areas with poor light.
• Secure or remove anything that could potentially
be used to break in or cause damage, such as ladders
or scaffolding. • Improve visibility by cutting back
vegetation, moving bins and other objects that obscure
natural surveillance.
• Ensure premises are well lit at night to deter potential
thieves.
The
Home Office Crime Reduction website offers a range
of advice for businesses to help prevent against a
variety of crimes. Log onto www.crimereduction.gov.uk/yourbusiness
for a comprehensive checklist and advice booklet.
Anyone
with information about the Ledbury Road burglary should
contact PC Simon Lloyd at Hereford Police Station
on 08457 444888 or call Crimestoppers anonymously
on 0800 55511, quoting ref: 332-s-201107.
