Snow does not happen often in Ross-on-Wye, in fact at the time
of writing this - 7 o'clock am on December 8th 2002, many younger
visitors to this site living in Ross will not
remember it snowing to any notable depth. The photographs below
are from my family album and were not specifically taken
with 'Wyenot' in mind because the internet as we know it today
was the stuff of science fiction at that time. I have
omitted the family shots of snowmen in the garden and snowball
fights on Tank Meadow with friends in the interest of trying to
hide the 'child' within every adult male.
One
of the houses in the bottom right photograph is my own and I bought
it just a few months before I moved to Ross, the completion date
being in February 1976. As you can see it is on a rather steep
hill and on that particular day I was here for the weekend preparing
for my relocation from Essex, where it did actually snow quite
often. Thinking about my future eighteen mile daily drive to work
I asked my new neighbour, 'Is it easy to get out of here when
it snows?" 'Don't worry about that,' he replied, 'it hardly
ever snows in Ross!'
Guess
what sight greeted me the very next morning, after a night camped
on the floorboards of an empty house with no heating available
at the time!
