St.
George's Day was celebrated in traditional style in Ross-on-Wye
on 23rd April 2004 by many local people, both in town and
at various establishments. Below I have published six of
the many photographs I took during the afternoon and evening,
which began for me by visiting Medieval Knight, Chris Mailey
at his home and watching whilst Mike Hall struggled to dress
Chris and Jon Holden in authentic medieval armour.
Chris,
Jon and Mike accompanied by the much younger knight, Jacob
Timms then walked through the town handing out the flag
of St. George and sweets to children, making their way to
the Hope
& Anchor for an evening of entertainment, which
included Morris Dancing and singing. The walk was no mean
feat for John and Chris, wearing the equivalent amount of
metal as that which can be found in a small family saloon
car.
At
the Riverside, the knights were joined by Foxwhelp Morris
and at the 'Hope', entertainment was provided by 'Wild Oats'
Forest Border Morris with 'Milne and James' performing in
the bar. The evening finished for me by rushing to Wilton
Court, where I photographed a Wild Oats and Forest Morris
combined dance session. I later joined in, playing a borrowed
guitar for one or two of the folk tunes which finished off
the evening. Only one shandy passed my lips throughout as
I needed to see through the camera and the knights had a
situation, in that armour suffers certain similarities to
those of a space suit but with a less sophisticated filtration
unit!. The same cannot be said for most however and I suspect
that a certain amount of drunkenness may have taken place.
