The
View from Tank Meadow

Elsewhere on this web site, there is a page of views which were taken at and above Weston-under-Penyard in 2002. The page mentions a walk from Ross-on-Wye to Weston-under-Penyard via the forest path and past the firing range. The views below were taken from Tank Meadow, which is at the Ross-on-Wye end of this same forest path. January 13th 2004, the day on which they were taken was forecast to be wet and windy. However in complete contrast, it turned out to be a lovely sunny day so I decided to go walking with my camera during the morning. The low winter sun made for a pale looking sky but the light was reasonably good. At the bottom of this page, I have included an old black and white image which was loaned to me by Glyn Williams. It was taken from a similar spot (a little further south) to the top photograph on this page and helped inspire my walk. I'm not sure of the date it was taken but it is probably circa 1965. It is now impossible to take the same view due to the height of the trees and looking at the area of the river, the trees along the bank now obscure the view of the water. What is most striking to me though is how much more green field area there was then. Today's view shows many more factories and housing estates. I like the fourth photograph down - a winter rural scene. |
