The
Cistercian Abbey at Tintern was founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare
but the remains which can be seen now are of a later date - the
church was not completed until the early 14th Century. New cloisters
were added in the 15th Century but the abbey was suppressed, along
with other monasteries, in 1536. During the slighting of Raglan
Castle at the time of the Civil War the records of Tintern
Abbey were destroyed, so not a great amount is known about its
history. Tintern is located about 21 miles South West of Ross-on-Wye
via Monmouth. Other nearby places include Trellech.
