White Castle,
Herefordshire
is situated at National Grid Reference SO 37942 / 16777 in Llantilio
Crossenny, approximately 16 miles west of Ross-on-Wye. Along with
Skenfrith
and Grosmont Castles, White Castle was built to protect the routes
of communication between Herefordshire and Wales. Originally called
Llantilio Castle, the name 'White Castle' or 'Castell Gwyn' in
its Welsh form refers to its white rendering, some of which is
still visible on the exterior walls.
The inner
ward is largely of 12th Century construction and is surrounded
by a moat whilst the outer ward and gate house were added during
the 13th Century and are encompassed by a dry ditch.
